Time, Love, and Sexual Preferences
The two poems, I, Being Born a Woman and Distressed by Edna St. Vincent Millay, and To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell, both present the ideas of time, love and sexual preferences. The two poems present the same ideas but in two very different manners.
In I, Being Born a Woman and Distressed, the female lover is saving her virginity. She will not give in to temptation because she believes that if they are only attracted to each other physically they will never be able to maintain a relationship when that physical attraction is gone. She believes that true love must be defined by a powerful mental connection and love; if a genuine conversation can be maintained than their love will last must longer than their years of beauty. I think is it very romantic that her lover has agreed to wait as long as possible; he knows it will eventually happen and he would not have it with any other woman which makes the woman feel more secure. They both know that time is passing them by but if they can keep their relationship strong in a nonsexual way then they can last forever.
The opposing poem, To His Coy Mistress, presents love in a very different manner. This woman is the interest of an older man, and even though he is older she had a lot more experience than he has. Her sexual past is filled with many erotic adventures; she believes that her age is catching up to her, so therefore she must embrace her younger years of beauty. She carries her virginity loosely and does not seem to be affected by the opinions of others.
Both poems present such extreme opposites, but they both manage to present the idea of time, love, and sexual preferences. In I, Being Born a Woman and Distressed, the female lover is letting time pass by until she knows there is a true connection which holds everlasting love. The female lover in To His Coy Mistress, holds the complete opposite beliefs and feels that time should be embraced especially while she is still young and beautiful. She enjoys the sexual experiences she has and she pride in having such a dominant sexual past.
